I have not been following Central American politics since the mid-1990s. That is why I was shocked to hear recently that El Salvador's FMLN has a good shot of winning the national election today. Here is an article that will bring back "fond" memories-- a 1989 NYT op-ed piece by then-VP Dan "Potatoe" Quayle about American support for human rights and democracy. And here is an article about the current election from the LA Times.
Reading all this makes me want to chant, "El pueblo, unido, jamas sera vencido." (Sorry about the missing accent marks.)
