Oscar Grant Johannes Mehserle BART shooting graffiti at Lake Merritt
This morning, I found this. A bunch of sick messages were spray painted around Lake Merritt in Oakland. I lived there for six years (one message was painted literally across the street from my old place). Watching this almost made me cry with anger and sadness. Everyone needs to calm down and direct their energies and emotions into something positive and productive.

Minute Stories of Famous Explorers by Jerome S. Kates (1934)
The cover. The book is in pretty decent shape, save the missing spine.
The paper stock is thick and sturdy. I can't tell if this is a children's book or not.
The list of explorers.
Part 2 of the list.
This page is on the left side and shows Lief Ericsson's journey and travails.
This is the right side and describes his accomplishment.
Here is a more obscure explorer. Salmon Andree tried to fly over the North Pole with a balloon. He was not successful.
Andree's fateful trip.
The opera, a Chilean ghost town, and a South American land speed record by bus
With the Gold Rush, San Francisco became a rich and vibrant city. Eventually, a grand opera house was constructed with donations from the local railroad, mining, and shipping barons.
In California, gold was king. In Chile, it's copper and nitrates. There is a former nitrate boom town called Humberstone. It's a ghost town now and I want to visit it. I especially want to see its abandoned theater, which may very well have hosted many long, convoluted operas.
Later this year, I am going to set a record. Notice I did not say "break" a record, as I don't think anyone has ever tried setting such a record. The thing about setting a record is that you can take as long as you want, as you'll be the first to set it.
The record will be to travel from Arica, Chile along the border with Peru down to Ushuaia, Argentina by bus. The legs should take this long:
Arica to Santiago: 30 hours
Santiago to Puerto Montt: 12 hours
Puerto Montt to Punta Arenas: 30 hours
Punta Arena to Ushuaia: 12 hours
Total time on bus: 84
I hope to do this in less than a week. I will be making a few quick side trips, one being to Humberstone near Iquique.
Interview with San Francisco Chronicle crime reporter Henry K. Lee (author of Presumed Dead)
I remember Henry from his days at Berkeley in the early 90s. He was the crime reporter for the campus paper, The Daily Californian. For a school paper, there was certainly no shortage of crime stories. A deranged woman named Rosebud broke into our Chancellor's residence with a machete and she was shot to death. A mini riot followed thereafter. And who can forget the Naked Guy?
After college, Henry moved up to the Big Leagues and joined the Chronicle. He was knee deep in the Hans Reiser murder case. A brilliant but deranged computer scientist killed his Russian doctor wife because he thought she was a bad influence on their children. It was a sad and compelling story. Henry has written a book about it. He took some time away from his police scanner to answer my questions about his life as a crime reporter, Oakland, and pizza.
Many reporters cut their teeth at the Daily Cal. Student journalists there are able to secure internships at large metro dailies, television networks and other media. Berkeley and the Bay Area as a whole is a very dynamic place, full of news and controversy and never a dull moment. It's great to see today's Daily Cal staff carrying on a proud tradition of journalistic excellence.

Volkswagen's India Models and its plan
Volkswagen recently announced the launch of its high-end luxury car, the Phaeton, in India. Named after the son of Phoebus, the Greek Sun God, it was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2002, and it hit the market in 2003. But the sales fell short of expectations. It was positioned against top-end brands like Mercedes, BMW, Lexus and Volkswagen’s own Audi. But it lacked the appeal of the rival brands — hence the lacklustre performance. But so keen is Volkswagen to make the Phaeton work in India that it has taken the car back to the drawing board. The result: LED daytime running lights, 18-inch wheels, a new dashboard, 18-way adjustable seats, better upholstery and even new air-conditioning to suit the Indian climate.
Earlier in the month, Volkswagen, headquartered in Lower Saxony in Germany, had announced that it will launch an all-new sedan, the Vento, in autumn. It will be manufactured at Volkswagen’s factory at Chakan in Pune, and has been completely designed to the needs and expectations of the Indian consumer. Also in the works is a small car. At present, there are six cars in Volkswagen’s stables: The Beetle, Polo, Passat, Jetta, Phaeton and Touareg. It could expand to eight. It fits petrol as well as diesel engines into its cars. Volkswagen thus straddles the entire spectrum of the Indian market. Its factory at Chakan, put up at a cost of Rs 3,200 crore, can make 110,000 cars in a year. Those who have seen the factory say this capacity can easily be doubled because of the modular nature of the plant.
Along with its other brands, Skoda and Audi, Volkswagen has a share of less than 1 per cent in the 1.3-million per annum Indian car market. From here, Volkswagen wants to raise it to 10 per cent in five years. India is vital for Volkswagen’s plan to become the world’s largest car maker by 2018. In 2009, it sold 6.29 million cars. This had placed it on the third spot after Toyota (7.23 million) and General Motors (6.50 million). Volkswagen is the largest player in China, Europe and South America. In China, it sold 1.4 million cars in 2009 — more than the entire Indian market — and its share of the market was an impressive 18 per cent. India, which is expected to grow to 3 million cars in five years, is the final frontier. By itself it may not catapult Volkswagen ahead of Toyota and General Motors, but it is one of the few markets left with large sale volumes up for grabs.
Volkswagen Vento to launch on July 6
Volkswagen Vento
Volkswagen India is all set for the launching of Vento — the company’s premium entry level sedan in the country. The new sedan was designed to compete against Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Toyota’s upcoming Etios sedan, Maruti Suzuki SX4, and Ford Fiesta.
This C-segment sedan would be available in petrol and diesel versions, powered by 1.6 L engines and will be available in manual and automatic (petrol version with AT) transmissions in the market. Price was estimated to be between Rs. 9-10 lakh.
Vento is the latest addition to VW’s Passat, Jetta, Touareg, New Beetle, Phaeton and the very recently and successfully-launched Polo hatchback car. The company believes that their new baby will set a benchmark in its class — timeless, pure and authentic design clubbed with quality engineering, sturdiness and driving dynamics.
Neeraj Gard, board member and director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Group Sales India Pvt. Ltd said that “The new Vento is a major milestone for the Volkswagen Brand in India. We have taken into consideration all the preferences and requirements of our customers in India for this vehicle. It will meet the premium demands of our future customers.”
Volkswagen Beetle most popular with U.S. women
Brands with the highest percentage of male registrations included exotics and pickup brands. When it comes to females, there were 6 brands with 10 percent or less female registrations. Bugatti has 0 percent female registrations while Ferrari had 5.6 percent and Lamborghini had 6.5 percent. Tesla had 9.8 percent and Aston Martin had 9.9 percent.
Women Love VW Beetles
The results are in, and we finally know which vehicles are truly “chick cars.”
"Still irresistible after all these years, the Volkswagen Beetle is the top car among women," writes the Wall Street Journal. "Following closely are the Nissan Rogue and Hyundai Tucson compact SUVs and Volkswagen Eos convertible." Just over 56 percent of registered Beetle owners are women.
In other news, the sky is blue, water is wet, and bacon is delicious.
The findings come from a study conducted by TrueCar Inc. It "was based on over 13 million actual vehicle registrations, covering the last two years." The study looked at gender differences in car registration.
Aside from the cars most popular with women, Autoblog points out, "There was some other interesting info gleaned from the research, including the revelation that 64% of all cars are registered by men despite the fact that there are more women (at 51% of the population, just a tad) than men in America."
Still, you should take the numbers with a grain of salt. Kicking Tires points out that "the number of women registering cars is different from the number driving or buying them, so these numbers may not reflect precisely who is behind the wheel."

Volkswagen Jetta Going Hybrid In 2011
Volkswagen have made no secret of their intentions to carve out a large space in the hybrid car market over the past few years and the next VW to get the hybrid treatment is set to be the popular Jetta model. 2011 will see the introduction of a hybrid gas/electric version of the 4-door sedan heading to US shores, hoping to take a bite out of the current hybrid king of the hill, the Toyota Prius.
We expect to see the car selling for just over $20,000 USD, which will lob it into direct competition with hybrids like the Prius and the Ford Fusion and will make it a fair bit cheaper than the upcoming Chevy Volt. Volkswagen introduced a hybrid version of their SUV Touareg which is set for release this fall in the US at the somewhat consumer-unfriendly price tag of $90,000+, many have been critical of the Touareg but this new hybrid Jetta has been widely viewed as a genuine play for notable market share in the explosively popular hybrid car sales arena.
Volkswagen unveils the 2011 Jetta
Times Square in New York is probably one of the most happening places on Earth with a hustlebustle of activity emanating from a true melting pot of various cultures - locals, settlers, tourists, shoppers and a whole bunch of people that simply mesmerise you at first glance.
If there's something to be done that needs grabbing attention, it's best to do it in Times Square. And if you're Volkswagen trying to break ground and gather up a significant market share in the US autospace , Times Square becomes an even more obvious choice for a venue. The event in question was the global showing of the 2011 Jetta and it was done in style!

2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Carbon Concept
Subaru's Impreza STI is a legend in its own time. Generally a number of versions like the Spec C and the A-Line get put out during its life cycle and the Impreza WRX CARBON will be one of these. It is based on the A-Line model which features a 5-speed automatic gearbox - yes, you read correctly. In keeping with the softening of the STI's traditionally hardcore image the automatic transmission was introduced so more customers could appreciate the car's performance. The main difference with the CARBON model is that a carbon fibre roof has been fitted in order to achieve weight reduction, lower the centre of gravity and consequently offer better performance. Additionally suede fabric has been used in the interior to give that extra lushness and comfort. Two engines are currently found in the STI hatch, depending on the market. The most common one is the 2.0-litre turbo that makes 227kW (308hp) and 422Nm of torque. A number of other places get a 2.5-litre turbo making around 221kW (300hp) and maximum torque of 407Nm. The Impreza WRX CARBON will be unveiled publicly at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show which starts 21 October for media and 24 October for the public. (Source: Subaru)

The toys do not transform into robots. Rather, the robot is etched onto the bottom of the car. Dumb.
The other two Varyags: The Russo-Japanese ship and the Chinese casino
Varyag I. Varyag means Viking, BTW.
- The cruiser was built in and launched out of Philadelphia in 1899.
- Commissioned into Imperial Russian Navy in 1901.
- In battle against Japan in the Russo-Japanese War in 1904, the crew sank it on purpose off of Incheon, Korea.
- The Imperial Japanese Navy salvaged it and it served as the light cruiser Soya.
- During World War I, Japan and Russia were allies so the ship was returned to Russia at Vladivostok in 1916 and renamed the Varyag.
- Sent to Great Britain for overhaul so that it could be used in Russia's Arctic squadron.
- Because of October Revolution in 1917, the British seized it.
- Sold to Germany for scrap in 1920.
- While en route to Germany, it sunk off of a Scottish village.
- The aircraft carrier project began in the Soviet Union in 1985.
- After the breakup of the USSR, the unfinished ship was transferred to Ukrainian ownership in 1992.
- With no engines, rudders, or electronics, it was put up for auction in 1998.
- A dummy corporation in Macau snatched it up under the false pretense that it was going to be turned into a casino.
- In 2002, it reached Dalian, China, where it is being converted into a Chinese aircraft carrier.

2011 VW Jetta Revealed
Volkswagen has revealed the all-new sixth generation Volkswagen Jetta. The 2011 Jetta will start at about $16,000 and focuses more on luxury than the utilitarian Golf it shares mechanical parts with.
The 2011 VW Jetta will have four engines available. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel, as well as the 2.5-liter five-cylinder and 2.0-liter turbocharged gas engines are carryovers from the current generation of the VW Jetta. New for 2011 will be the 2.0 TSI engine, a four-cylinder engine that has both a supercharger and a turbocharger. Combining a supercharger and a turbocharger on one engine will give 2011 VW Jetta TSI models excellent low-end grunt as well as lots of power high up on the tachometer.
The 2011 VW Jetta is completely redesigned inside and out. The new Jetta is 3.5 inches longer than the last generation. Because of that, leg room has gown by 2.6 inches to 38.1 inches. If you’re interested in customization, the interior accents on 2011 Volkswagen Jettas can be switched out at a dealership for a different look.

Vernadsky Research Station in Antarctica: Southernmost bar in the world
The Vernadsky station used to belong to the UK and was called Faraday. As the UK consolidated its stations, it sold the station to the Ukraine for one pound, on condition that the Ukraine continued research there. The hole in the ozone layer was discovered there, you know.
The Foxes took these photos and shared their experience.
